Brighton is a suburb of Melbourne, located just 11km south-east of its central business district. It has a population of over 21,000 people and is a part of the local government area of the City of Bayside.

History

In 1840, an Englishman named Henry Dendy bought an area of land, then known as Waterville and a town was first surveyed soon after in 1841. The land became known as the ‘Brighton Estate’ but Dendy’s proposed emigration scheme failed because there were no ready sources of water.

Brighton is named after Brighton in England, a famous beach-side tourist destination which also has colourful beach boxes similar to the ones on Dendy Street Beach which have existed in the area since 1862.

Brighton is an affluent suburb, home to some of the wealthiest people in Melbourne including many notable actors, sportsmen and personalities.

The town is also home to the Royal Brighton Yacht Club, two cinemas, a library and many shops and restaurants.
