Victoria

Although small in comparison to the other states, Victoria certainly packs in the sights and sounds! From the laneway bars and cafes of Melbourne city, to The Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles, the Yarra Valley wine region, the gold fields of Sovereign Hill, the natural hot springs of Mornington and Daylesford and the snow fields in the north during winter; with so much to see and do, it is unsurprising that Victoria is a tourist’s delight all year round.

Victoria occupies the south-eastern corner of the Australian mainland. It is bordered by New South Wales to the north, South Australia to the west and the Bass Straight to the south. Victoria is the smallest of the mainland states but also the most densely populated, with the second highest population behind NSW. The majority of inhabitants live in the Greater Melbourne area. Victoria is roughly divided into eight major regions; Barwon South-West, Central Highlands, Hume, Gippsland, Grampians, Greater Melbourne, Loddon-Mallee North, Loddon-Mallee South. The capital city of Victoria is Melbourne, the second most populous city in Australia behind Sydney.

Melbourne has the reputation of being the ‘home’ of many things in Australia. It is referred to as the home of sport; hosting annual events like The Australian Open tennis tournament, The Australian Grand Prix, and The Melbourne Cup horse race, as well as being the spiritual home of Australian Rules Football and Australian Cricket, particularly when played at Melbourne’s famous and colossal stadium, the MCG. Melbourne is also considered the cultural capital of Australia and home of Australian street art, film and television, restaurant and cafe culture.
