Red Cliffs is located on the River Murray in the Sunraysia region of Victoria. It is 544 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 16 kilometres south of Mildura. It has a population of 4,625.

History

The town takes its name from the stunning red/orange cliffs that are just to the east of the town. The area was first settled by Europeans in 1918. Following the First World War, over 700 soldiers arrived to help develop the town’s vineyards for the dried fruit industry.

The land was cleared by the biggest tractor of its time known as ‘Big Lizzie’. This took an incredible five years.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Red Cliffs is a diverse community with three primary schools and a secondary school. There are also many sports facilities including a golf club and a cricket association. The town’s Australian Rules football team plays in the Sunraysia Football League.

The infamous ‘Big Lizzie’ can be seen at one of the town’s parks. A popular event on the social calendar is the Lunar Festival. Held every March, this carnival celebrates the end of the grape harvest.
