Numurkah is a town on the Goulburn Valley Highway. It has a population of 4,768. The town is situated on the Broken Creek floodplain.

History

Before European settlers arrived, the area was home to the Yorta Yorta people. Squatters from New South Wales moved into the area starting in the 1830s.

The township of Numurkah was officially established in 1868. It was surveyed in 1875. The name comes from an Aboriginal word for war shield. A post office opened in 1878, and a railway station offered connections to the Goulburn Valley Railway from 1881.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Numurkah has an Australian rules football team, which competes in the Murray Football League. The town is also home to the Numurkah Golf Club and the Numurkah Lawn Tennis Club.

The town also hosts a number of events annually. These include art shows, fishing competitions, go-kart championships, and car shows.
