Northcote is an up and coming suburb of Victoria with a population of around 22,900. It is 6 kilometres north-east of Melbourne’s central business district and offers something for everyone.

History

The area of Northcote was once home to the Yarra tribe. They owned pieces of land near to the Yarra River. European settlers came to Northcote in 1839. In the 1850s, lots of large houses were built, as well as schools, churches and hotels.

Northcote contained many slaughter yards, piggeries and claypits during the 1870s. It wasn’t until the 1880s and 1890s when the population increased. Throughout the 1950s, the town attracted lots of Italian and Greek migrants.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There is the Northcote Plaza Shopping Centre, which is next to All National Park. The park has picnic facilities and play equipment, as well as a skatepark and basketball courts. Batman Park and Johnson Park are also in the area.

The high street has a great mix of bars, restaurants and galleries. Northcote has good public transport services, schools and sports clubs.
