North Geelong is a suburb of Geelong in Victoria with a population of over 2500. The suburb was bypassed by traffic from Melbourne from the Princes Freeway due to the completion of the Geelong Ring Road in 2009.

History

From 1858 to 1971, Geelong Gas Company ran a gasworks on a site on Victoria and Douro Streets.

In the 1950s through to the 1970s, North Geelong saw a big increase in housing construction. This was in part fuelled by Geelong’s manufacturing sector and growing industries.

The current Post Office opened in 1987.

In 1998, hotel owner George Ramia built a 15m high replica of the Sphinx on top of his hotel, known as the Sphinx Hotel.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Geelong Arena includes an indoor pool and a basketball court with a capacity for 2000. It also hosts musical acts and was a basketball venue during the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
