Mooroolbark is 31km to the east of Melbourne’s central business district and is home to a population of over 20,000 people. The suburb is part of the local government area of the Shire of Yarra Ranges.

History

The roots of the name Mooroolbark are disputed by historians. It was originally believed that the word meant ‘Red Earth’. This led to that phrase being used widely throughout the community. Recent research suggests that the name could come from an Aboriginal word, ‘Moorolbik’, meaning ‘great water place’.

Whatever the origins, the name Mooroolbark has been in use since European settlement in the late 19th century. A town was first surveyed in the area as early as 1855.

Mooroolbark has a host of facilities including supermarkets, gyms, cafes and restaurants. These are all located around the main shopping district on Manchester Road and Brice Avenue.
