The small town of Koo Wee Rup has a population of just over 3,000 people. It lies on former marshland more than 60 kilometres south-east from Melbourne’s CBD.

History

The town’s unusual name means ‘plenty of blackfish’ from the language of the indigenous people who used to populate the area. When the town was settled by Europeans in the late 1800s it quickly established a post office, which opened in 1891.

During the mid-1900s the area saw large numbers of Italian and Dutch families moving to the area.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town holds the title for being Australia’s largest asparagus producing region. Beef and potato farming are also prevalent in the heavily agricultural area.

Koo Wee Rup has a choice of schools, and offers various sporting opportunities. It has its own Aussie Rules Football team.
