Drouin is a town 90km east of Melbourne with a population of 9,686. The town is set amidst the rolling plains and lush forests of West Gippsland, and serves as a great base for exploring the region.

History

The forests initially prevented settlement, but the building of a coaching station soon led to development in the 1870s. The Gippsland Railway enabled the formation of a township, and Drouin soon kicked on from there. Sawmills, a quarry and numerous dairy farms sprang up, and the town progressed steadily from the 1880s onward. Today, Drouin is a thriving commercial, residential and light industrial centre.

Drouin boasts several beautiful parks, including Civic Park, Bellbird Park and Memorial Park. A local foodie favourite, the town is also part of the Gourmet Deli Trail. The main shopping strip has plenty of retail outlets, ranging from small businesses to large supermarkets.
