Blackburn is a semi-rural town located 17km away from the heart of Melbourne. Its unique village atmosphere has attracted a population of around 13,000 people.

History

Blackburn is built around a man-made lake but it is believed it takes its name from James Blackburn, who designed another area of water, the Yan Yean Reservoir in the nearby City of Whitehorse.

Settlement in the area began in the 1840s with orchards and farms taking the place of what had been a densely wooded landscape. The town was originally named Blackburn Creek but was renamed Blackburn in 1883.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Blackburn Lake Sanctuary is a protected area around the artificial lake which has attracted visitors since it was built in 1889. Other parks in the area include the Blackburn Creeklands and the Cootamundra Walk.

Elsewhere, the town is serviced by two train stations with the main shopping area of Box Hill a short train journey away.
