Beaufort is a small town on the Western Highway in the state of Victoria, and is 50km west of Ballarat, and 44km east of Ararat. It is situated in the local government area of Pyrenees Shire, and has a population of 1,004. It is only 164km away from the state capital, Melbourne and has its own railway station.

History

Early settlers arrived in Beaufort between 1836 and 1838. By the 1860s it had a strong agricultural and timber district, helped in part by 2 gold rushes in the 1850s. Aborigines knew Beaufort as ‘Peerick’ or ‘Yarram-yarram.’

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Beaufort is home to a Central Highlands League Australian Rules football club. But the highlight of the cultural calendar is the Rainbow Serpent festival, which is a 5 day festival that has been running since 1998. It features music and arts and draws large numbers of people from the surrounding area.
