One of the easiest ways to check for water leaks is to time test your water meter. Take a note of the reading/numbers on your meter, and then re-check it in an hour. Of course, be sure nobody uses taps or toilets in the house in this time, it may be easiest to do this when going out for a couple of hours and the house is locked up. Water hammer can be causes by something as simple as a worn tap washer. Other causes are excessive water pressure, worn shut off valves, or poorly supported pipe work. Water hammer should be properly diagnosed and rectified as soon as possible to prevent any possible damage to pipes and appliances.
If your hot water unit runs on gas, it is likely the pilot flame has gone out which may have been caused by strong winds or another internal fault. If you are unable to re-light your hot water unit easily, you will need to call O'Shea Plumbing to have your hot water unit repaired and serviced. If your hot water unit is leaking, your relief/overflow valve may need replacement, or worst case is the hot water cylinder or heat exchanger leaking and the hot water unit may need to be replaced.
