Hawthorn East Dental offers a comprehensive range of services, from family and children's dentistry, dental injectable, root canal therapy to wisdom teeth surgery. Our core specialty is cosmetic dentistry including full reconstruction and implant surgery with specialist-grade implant systems. We also pride ourselves on our highly successful management of TMJ/grinding disorders and sleep apnoea/snoring.

Dr David Cao, founding principal of Hawthorn East Dental, obtained his Bachelor of Dental Science at University of Melbourne in 2004, after completing VCE at Melbourne Grammar School in 1999. David takes pride in his gentle and calming approach to dental procedures, with a large following of patients whom have fear of the dentist. He aims to build rapport and patient’s confidence with dental visits Dr. Cao is a member of ADA, OM and accredited dental surgeon at Bellbird Private Hospital.

Do you offer free consultation?

We offer a complimentary comprehensive consultation for all whitening, cosmetic and implant procedures. During this 30 minute appointment, we sit down and assess your teeth and smile. Then we will chat about what the procedure(s) involved, the advantages and disadvantages of treatment, the alternatives and the cost.
Do you place implants?

Absolutely, we use the world-renowned Astra Tech EV implant system. Astra Tech (Dentsply Inc.) is a Swedish company that pioneered the modern day parallel dental implant. Since the Eighties, many specialist surgeons and other competitive companies have used Astra Tech implants as a benchmark to compare success rate and longevity. Do you do Cosmetic Injections? I heard Cosmetic Injections are used in the cosmetic world, how will it benefit my teeth?

Cosmetic Injections have been used in the dental world for some time now, particularly in the management of TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder). This disorder is generally due to heavy grinding and/or clenching of the teeth, leading to headaches, neck pain and inability to chew. Cosmetic Injections can lessen the destructive effects of grinding/clenching and reduce headaches associated with TMD.
I hate needles but my teeth hurt when I have a clean done. Do you have anything that can help?

Don't worry, you are not the only one. Professional scale and clean with a vibrating ultrasonic scale can make the gums and teeth quite sensitive. At Hawthorn East Dental, we use the revolutionary SONICflex air scaler, as oppose to electric scaler, that's much gentler on your teeth. If your gums are still sensitive during the clean, we will utilise the Oraqix system, a needleless anaesthesia that numbs the gums instantly for duration of 30 mins.
Will whitening damage my teeth?

Whitening will not damage your teeth. It works by breaking down stain particles residing in the pores of your teeth. During the treatment, you may experience tingle like feeling in your teeth. These are temporary sensations and will disappear within hours or a day after your treatment. Other times, you might feel sensitivity towards cold. If this occurs we suggest breaking from your whitening treatment for a day or so and continue the day after.
I was told I snore badly and I heard it might impact on my health. Is there something you can do to help?

Sleep apnoea and snoring can occur when the tongue blocks the airway while we sleep. It’s very common and can be detrimental on our long-term health. For those with suspected sleep apnoea, your medical GP will refer you have a sleep study done. This assessment will determine the severity of your sleep apnoea and necessary treatment. At Hawthorn East Dental, we can help you construct an individually tailored sleep apnoea/snoring appliance with highly successful results.
Why are baby teeth important, especially when they will fall out anyway?

Baby teeth are extremely important as they form the healthy foundation for the adult teeth that replaces them. Things that we commonly assess are decay and the bite of your child's teeth. We also look at development, aberrant habits and risk factors such as general health, medications and dietary habits that will ultimately impact your child's teeth. Most importantly, assessment of your child's teeth at an early age, eliminates that fear of the dentist.
What do I do if I knocked my tooth out?

Whether it's a baby tooth or an adult tooth, don't panic. If a tooth comes out completely, quickly place it into a small container with milk or saline covering all it. Make an appointment ASAP and bring the container with you. Dental trauma is very common and hence why we always recommend custom-made mouthguard protection for any sport.
Do I need to remove my wisdom teeth?

The answer to this question will differ between patients to patient. It really comes down to whether there's enough space in the mouth to accommodate them AND the ability to keep them clean. If there is infection and pain associated with them, then we would highly recommend removing them. If you have crowded teeth, wisdom teeth coming through on a funny angle or unable to keep they clean, it would still be beneficial to remove them as a preventative measure.
Do you perform dental treatment under general anaesthesia?

Yes, we do. Dr David Cao has over 12 years of GA experience with special accreditation at Bellbird Private Hospital (Healthscope Hospital Network) as dental surgeon in field of surgical dentistry. He employs the safest surgical methods to minimize risks, and post-op swelling and discomfort. If the need arises, we will arrange the GA appointment for you. Everyone’s wisdom tooth is different and it's best to assess your situation and discuss what's most appropriate for you.
