Smithton is situated on the far northwest coast of Tasmania. It is 85km northwest of Burnie and sits on the Bass Highway. The population of the area is 3935. Almost 90 per cent of people who live in Smithton were born in Australia. The town is part of the Circular Head local government area.
History
In late 1873, the local Duck River Post Office started operating. Its name was later changed to Smithton Post Office in 1895. The township of Smithton was established in 1905. The town began to develop after the local kindergarten and hospital were opened in 1951.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Smithton is the commercial hub of the surrounding region, despite its relative remoteness. Beef and dairy farming are Smithton’s main industries. Many of the residents also work in the fishing, timber and tourism sectors. Attractions include the Smithton Country Club, Allendale Gardens and the Tall Timbers Tasmania restaurant.
