Port Sorell is a town in Tasmania on the northwest coast. Located on the waterway of the same name off of Bass Strait, it lies 20km east of Davenport, close to Shearwater and Hawley Beach. It has a population of over 2,200.

History

The area was originally called Panatana by the local Aborigines.

The town, which was then known as Burgess, used to be a fishing and sealing port. The named was changed to Port Sorell in 1822 to honour the third Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen’s Land, Governor William Sorell. The first post office in the town opened in 1845 and closed in 1853. The current post office opened in 1944.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Port Sorell is a popular holiday spot for tourists. It borders the Rubicon Estuary. This estuary has been identified by BirdLife International as an important bird area as it is home to many waders, especially the pied oystercatcher.
