Huonville is a riverside town in the south-east of Tasmania. It is situated 38 kilometres south of Hobart and has a population of around 1,700.

History

A crew commanded by Admiral Bruni d’Entrecasteaux were the first to see the Huon River. The river was named after his second in command, Captain Huon de Kermadec. However, the first European settlers were two men called William and Thomas Walton. They came to Huonville in 1840.

Ranelagh was originally meant to be the site of the town. Huonville was officially called a town in 1891.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

You can find beautiful scenery in Huonville and pretty apple growing areas. The area is known for its history as one of Australia’s biggest apple producers. Huon River is great for a spot of boating and fishing. It’s an area that attracts lots of tourists.

Huonville is home to an industrial park and some grocery stores.
