Welcome to Burnie, TAS

Burnie is a port city on the Tasmanian north coast. The urban area is home to about 20,000 people making it Tasmania’s fourth largest city.

History

Burnie was founded in 1827. Back then, its inhabitants still called it Emu Bay. The name changed in the 1840s in honour of William Burnie, the director of a local farming corporation. To this day, farming and forestry still play an important role in the city’s economy.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Burnie has its own port and airport as well as all the amenities you could possibly wish for. These include a hospital, a university campus, and the Burnie Arts and Function Centre. The latter is the city’s primary venue for art exhibitions and music shows.

Wildlife lovers should head to the Little Penguin Observation Centre on West Beach. From September to March, you can watch the flightless birds nest in their burrows.
