Bridport is a Tasmanian town in the Dorset Council local government area. It’s situated on the north-east coast of the island, about 90km from Launceston. Bridport has a population of more than 1,200.

History

Bridport was first settled by Europeans in the 1830s, and grew steadily as a fishing town. The waters around the port are still rich in lobster and scallops, and a freshwater trout farm is also maintained. A post office opened in 1882, and tourism became increasingly important to the economy throughout the 20th century. The Barnbougle Dunes golf course opened in 2004, and is often ranked amongst the world’s 50 best courses.

A balmy seaside haven, Bridport welcomes holidaymakers all the year round. A range of accommodation exists to suit every budget. Naturally, you can’t walk ten feet without finding a tempting new seafood restaurant. Helicopter tours are available to see the region’s beauty from above, and quad bikes can be rented to get up close and personal with Kookaburra Ridge.
