Bellerive is a town in the greater Hobart area. It begins at Second Bluff carries along the shoreline until it ends at Kangaroo Bay. It is in the City of Clarence local government area. It has a population of 4,359.

History

Settlers arrived in Bellerive in the 1820s, and the area developed at a rapid pace. Many ferries connected the area to Hobart. Slaughterhouses and farming were important early industries. Taverns and inns were built to accommodate the workers who stayed in the area. The name Bellerive means ‘beautiful river bank.’

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Bellerive Oval hosts cricket matches and is a popular day out. The Bellerive Beach near the Derwent River is a scenic bit of coastline. The town itself is packed full of historical buildings from the 19th century. The Sound Preservation Museum is found in the old post office from 1897. A public park has been fashioned out of what was once a British fortress called Kangaroo Battery.
